The Berrien County Historical Association
The Berrien County Historical Association operates the History Center at Courthouse Square and collects, preserves and interprets the history of Berrien County through exhibits, tours, publications, research and educational and community outreach programs.
The Berrien County Historical Association was established in 1967 to restore the 1839 courthouse as a historical museum. Using a combination of grants, contributions and thousands of hours of volunteer labor, the historical association carefully restored the courthouse. When the project was finished in 1976, the courthouse had a fully restored courtroom. During the 1970s, BCHA gained ownership of the other properties on Courthouse Square. The purchases were completed in 1902 with the purchase of the County Records and Office building. The buildings were sold to Berrien County in 2005. BCHA has a long term lease and is responsible for preservation, renovation and maintenance.Today, the Board of Directors and staff operate the site that includes a museum, archives, museum store and offer a variety of variety of special events and programs. The Board has also initiated a Records Building Renovation Project to restore and renovate the 1860/1873 County Records and Office Building.
The Berrien County Historical Association is a 501(c) 3 charitable organization. Contributions to BCHA for operation or special projects are greatly appreciated and are tax deductible. Please contact the Executive Director for more information.
